4.Methodology

The gathering method for this data analysis of this research is conducted in textual analysis form.

The data are the humorous texts from the American situation comedy TV show “ The Office” which is streaming on Amazon Prime. The range of data collection is from the first season to the second season of The TV show. The collected humorous text must have the punchline to be clarified as a joke. The data collection is repeated for the second time to assess whether they could qualify as a joke. The amount of collected humorous texts is 80 in total which is used in simple sampling to find 40 humorous texts to analyze by the related strategies. The data are divided into two sections which are the humorous text in the source language and another section in the target language. The source language texts are sorted, using the GTVH theory, while the target language texts will be analyzed by baker strategies and Vinay & Darbelnet’s translation techniques.

Raw Data Management

The collected data are classified in the table form on program Microsoft Word. The data of the texts are labeled the episode of each joke that occurred. The collected data are compared into two parts which are the source language and the target language. After the sampling process, the collected data can be analyzed with the General Theory of Verbal Humor (Attardo, 2002) and translation techniques (Baker, 1992) (Vinay, Darbelnet, 1958).
